Rotary is a worldwide network of inspired individuals who translate their passion into relevant social causes to change lives in communities. Our motto, “Service Above Self” exemplifies the humanitarian spirit of the 1.2 million Rotarians throughout the world.
Access to clean water is a real concern in most third world countries. Worldwide, one out of every six people don’t have access to clean water. Every day about 4,500 children die from water related disease, including Diarrhea. For children under 5, water related diseases are the leading cause of death—killing more people than any war with guns. Worldwide, 50% of available hospital beds are occupied with people suffering from water related disease.
Millions of women and children worldwide spend several hours a day getting water from polluted sources. Most days, women and children walk two hours to the closest source then have a trek of two more hours to get home with a full container of dirty water.
The Pequot Lakes Rotary Club has been involved in clean water projects in third world countries. No other service has greater impact on families and nations than that of providing safe drinking water and proper disposal of human waste. The smile on the face of a child getting his/her first glass of clean water is priceless.
Providing funding to dig a water well so the children can have access to clean drinking water isthe goal of the Rotary Ride for Clean Water. Members of the Pequot Lakes Rotary Club enjoy the ride and invite others to participate. The Rotary Rides for Clean Water will raise enough money to help improve the living conditions of people who are not as fortunate as we are.
